Extended mIRC Colour Proposal

Based on mIRC Forums Discussion

Implemented in WeeChat and Irssi. (know more clients? contact Nei to update this document.)

Advantages

Keeps compatible with existing mIRC Colour codes.

Old clients will ignore "new" colours or just substitute other colours instead.

Disadvantages

No real true colour.

Technical specs

Wire protocol is: Control+C [0-9]{1,2} (,[0-9]{1,2})? to set foreground and optionally background, compatible with the existing mIRC colour codes and making use of the non-standardised colour numbers 16-98.

Other Specs

Visual IRC Specification, with alternate RGB Colour Proposal

Alternate Proposal: Control+C # RRGGBB to specify full RGB colours, claim to have been implemented in now defunct Atheme Conspire fork of X-Chat.
Disadvantage: Non-supporting clients will litter the screen with "raw" #rrggbb codes.
Potential Advantage: Clean cut, full RGB support; easy to implement without table; those visible raw codes might be an incentive for clients to add support.
